Does Google AI Overview cite my site?

How to check whether Google AI Overview, AI Mode, and Gemini are citing your site: the manual queries that actually work, the Search Console report most articles miss, and how to turn one-off checks into repeatable monitoring.

[01]Three surfaces, three answers

AI Overview, AI Mode, and Gemini are separate surfaces

Before you check whether your site is cited, you have to know which surface you are checking. Most articles answering this question lump everything together. They are not the same.

AI Overview is the AI-generated summary that appears at the top of a regular Google search results page when Google determines a summary will be useful. AI Mode is a separate tab inside Google Search that runs a conversational, multi-turn answer with its own citations. Gemini is Google’s standalone chatbot at gemini.google.com. Their interfaces and reporting differ. A page shown on one surface should not be assumed to appear on another for the same query.

Picking the right surface up front is what separates a useful audit from a confusing one.

Why this matters: if you only ran the check in Gemini (the easiest one), you might walk away thinking you are well-cited and miss that AI Overview (the Google Search surface) does not show your page as a supporting link. The audit below covers all three deliberately.

[02]The manual check

How to check, by hand

The simplest way to find out whether AI Overview, AI Mode, or Gemini cites your site is to run the queries yourself. It takes about 30 minutes for an initial audit of 20 queries. Do this first, even if you plan to automate later. The manual pass tells you what citations actually look like for your category, and you cannot evaluate an automated tool without that grounding.

01

Run the queries that would actually trigger an AI Overview

Open a clean browser session and run the informational, comparison, and brand queries closest to your offering: "how to [topic]", "what is [topic]", "best [category] for [audience]", and "[your brand] vs [competitor]". Record whether an AI Overview appears before recording any links.

Keep location, device, account state, and query wording as consistent as practical between checks.

02

For each query, note which sources the Overview cited

When the Overview appears, open its supporting links. Record the domain, exact page URL, visible position, and date. Capture a screenshot so a later audit can distinguish a changed source from a changed layout.

If the Overview shows generic top-of-funnel sources (Wikipedia, Reddit, big media), you are not necessarily losing. Note it and move on. Where you should be cited and are not is the signal.

03

Switch to AI Mode and re-run the same queries

Open AI Mode and run the same list again. Record its supporting links independently. Search Console combines AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Generative AI report, so a manual check is needed to identify the surface.

Use the same initial query for the comparison. Track follow-up questions separately because they change the prompt set.

04

Open Gemini and ask it the same questions

Go to gemini.google.com and ask the same queries plus a few brand-direct ones. If a Sources button appears, open it and record the exact URL. Keep related links and double-check links in separate columns because Google says related links are not necessarily generation sources.

Use the Gemini-specific guide for the exact link classification and audit template.

05

Classify the evidence before counting it

For Google Search, count a supporting link only when the result exposes it. For Gemini, separate Sources from related and double-check links. In every case, preserve the exact URL and surface instead of reducing the observation to a yes or no field.

A visible brand mention without a link is still useful visibility, but it is not a citation.

06

Document everything in one spreadsheet

For each query, record: surface (AI Overview / AI Mode / Gemini), whether you were cited, citation position, the cited URL, and the date. The first audit is your baseline. Re-run the same list on a fixed cadence to see how the observation changes, but do not assume one content edit or system refresh caused the change.

Add a "competitor cited" column. Half the value of this exercise is knowing which rival pages Google keeps picking over yours, so you can study the format.

Two warnings. First, results can vary by location, device, account state, and query wording, so keep those controls as consistent as practical. Second, the answer and supporting links can change between checks. Treat the first audit as a dated snapshot, not a verdict.

[03]Search Console

Use the Generative AI performance report in Search Console

Google is rolling out a Generative AI performance report to a subset of Search Console properties. It provides a first-party view of impressions from Google’s generative AI features, but it is not a citation report.

The report combines AI Overviews and AI Mode. It shows impressions by page, country, device, and date, but no clicks, queries, or surface split. The regular Web performance report continues to include AI-feature traffic alongside other Google Search traffic. Read Google’s report documentation.

01

Look for the Generative AI performance report

Choose the property you are auditing and check whether Search Console shows the Generative AI performance report. Google is rolling it out to a subset of properties, so it may not be available in your account yet.

02

Review impressions by page and audience

The report combines AI Overview and AI Mode impressions. Review its page, country, device, and date dimensions to find URLs and audiences with growing or declining exposure. It does not provide a query dimension or separate the two surfaces.

03

Export the impression data

Export the page-level impression data and add it to your audit spreadsheet. Google applies its standard impression rules, including whether a link must be scrolled into view for the result type. An impression is not a click, query report, recommendation, or surface-level citation audit.

04

Pair it with Web performance and manual checks

Use the regular Web performance report for clicks, queries, and landing-page trends. Google includes traffic from AI features there but does not isolate it. Re-run important queries manually to identify the surface, cited URL, competitors, and citation position.

The citation gap: The report tells you that your site received an impression across AI Overview or AI Mode. It does not tell you which surface, query, citation, or recommendation produced it. Use the page-level trend to prioritize the manual audit in section 02.

[04]What makes a page citable

If you are not being cited, here is what to fix

Google does not publish a weighting recipe or a special optimization path for AI features. Its guidance points back to the same Search fundamentals: make the page crawlable, indexed, snippet-eligible, accurate, and useful. Fix the six areas below because they improve eligibility and clarity, not because any one of them guarantees a supporting link. Read Google’s AI features guidance.

Direct, complete answers near the top

Open with a concise answer that matches the page title, then add the detail a reader needs. This improves clarity, but Google does not promise that a specific passage will be selected.

Structured lists and tables

Use numbered steps, comparison tables, and labelled rows when they help the reader. Clear structure makes a page easier to scan, but no format guarantees an AI Overview supporting link.

Indexed and eligible for a Search snippet

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to be shown as a supporting link in its AI features. Fix crawling, indexing, and snippet controls first.

Clear authorship and source attribution

Use accurate bylines, explain relevant expertise, and link to primary evidence where a claim needs support. These details help readers assess the page; they do not guarantee source selection.

Structured data that matches visible content

Use supported structured data only when it matches content readers can see. Google says no special schema is required for its AI features, and markup does not guarantee inclusion.

Accurate maintenance for time-sensitive topics

Review pricing, product comparisons, news, and regulation pages when facts change. Show a modified date only after a real edit. Accuracy helps users, but a date alone does not earn a citation.

The longer cluster of citation-optimisation work (schema markup, freshness, internal linking) is covered in our AI Overview tracking page and the platform-specific guides for Gemini and ChatGPT.

[05]Repeatable monitoring

How do I monitor Google AI Overview supporting links?

Search Console does not provide a surface-level citation alert. Its Generative AI report is useful but combines AI Overview and AI Mode impressions, so it cannot confirm which query, surface, or supporting link produced an impression.

Two practical approaches can turn a manual snapshot into a repeatable record.

Option 1: roll your own

Schedule a fixed set of priority queries through a data source that explicitly exposes AI Overview supporting links. Store the exact query, market, language, run date, cited URL, and a screenshot or raw response for each observation.

Verify the feed against a live result before relying on it, monitor parser failures, and record a no-Overview result as valid data rather than silently dropping the run.

Option 2: use a tracker

Trakkr runs a fixed prompt set daily across eight supported AI surfaces. For Google AI Overview, its provider-aware source data records exposed links by prompt and run so you can compare history and competitors. It does not currently turn Search Console’s combined AI Mode impressions into surface-level AI Mode citations, so audit AI Mode separately.

[07]FAQ

Does Google AI Overview cite my site?

Sometimes, yes. Whether your site is cited depends on the query, your content, and whether Google selects your page as a useful supporting source. Google does not maintain a public list of every page it has cited. Check manually across AI Overview, AI Mode, and Gemini. If your property has Search Console's new Generative AI performance report, use its combined AI Overview and AI Mode impression data to identify pages worth auditing, but do not treat an impression as proof of a citation.

What is the difference between AI Overview, AI Mode, and Gemini?

AI Overview is an AI-generated summary in Google Search. AI Mode is a conversational Google Search experience that can fan a question into subtopics and run multiple searches. Gemini is Google's separate assistant. Audit them separately because their interfaces and reporting differ; Search Console's Generative AI report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode, not Gemini.

Can I see AI Overview citations in Google Search Console?

Partly. Google is rolling out a Generative AI performance report to a subset of Search Console properties. It combines impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, with page, country, device, and date dimensions. It does not report clicks, queries, citations, or separate the two AI surfaces. Google also includes AI-feature traffic in the regular Web performance report, where it cannot be isolated. Manual checks are still required to confirm a citation.

Can I set up alerts for brand mentions in Google AI Overviews?

Not natively. Search Console does not provide a surface-level citation alert. You can schedule repeat checks for a fixed query set or use an AI visibility platform that records Google AI Overview results over time. Keep AI Mode as a separate audit unless the tool explicitly supports its source links.

How often do AI Overview citations change?

Google does not publish a universal refresh rate for AI Overview supporting links. For an operational baseline, re-run the same priority queries weekly and treat one observation as a snapshot rather than a stable result.

Why does Gemini cite my site but AI Overview does not?

Gemini and Google Search are separate user surfaces with different interfaces and reporting. A Gemini link does not prove that the same page will appear as a supporting link in AI Overview. Test the same query on each surface and record the exact URL shown.

Do AI Overview citations count as backlinks?

They are supporting links inside Google Search, not third-party editorial backlinks. Measure them through Google's documented Search click and impression rules, and do not assume a separate ranking benefit from the link itself.

Stop checking by hand.
